How to cut a PTO shaft to suit the tractor & implement

Step 1 of 10

With the tractor and implement mounted straight and in-line, measure the distance between PTO stubs. Measure between locking groove to locking groove.

(Example - 1020mm)

Subtract 100mm from that measurement in step 1. 

This will give the shaft some travel to allow for connecting/disconnecting and to allow for turning

Write down the new number or remember it

(Example - 1020 - 100 = 920mm)

Slide the PTO shaft together and measure the length from locking pin to locking pin on each yoke.

(Example - 1250mm)

Subtract the calculated gap found in step 2, from the overall length of the new shaft found in step 3. This will give you how much is needed to be cut off.

(Example - 1250 - 920 = 330mm)

Slide the two halves of the PTO shaft apart and measure the amount to be cut off. Measure from the end of the plastic tube and mark at the correct measurement.

(Example - 330mm)

Using the angle grinder, cut the plastic tube on that half of the PTO shaft. Rotate the cover to cut right around and avoid the disc contacting the steel shaft inside.

Keep the offcut

Using the offcut from step 6 as a measuring guide, mark and cut the other plastic tube and steel shafts of both halves.

Remember, what gets cut from one half, must be repeated on the other to shorten anything.

Remove burr's from the ends of both steel and the plastic guards

Grease the end of the socket half of the shaft to help with re-assembly

Slide the two halves back together and fit to machine.

Remember the wide angle joint must go on the tractor end
