1. Remove the Affected Fasteners

  • Carefully unscrew the stainless bolts from the product.

  • Inspect the bolts and surrounding area for corrosion products (white powdery residue on aluminum or dark staining).

2. Clean the Corroded Area

  • Use a plastic scraper or nylon brush to remove loose corrosion.

  • Apply a mild aluminum-safe cleaner (or a mix of warm water and baking soda) to neutralize any remaining corrosion.

  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely.

3. Treat the Surface

  • Lightly sand the affected aluminum area with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 400–600 grit) to remove discoloration and smooth the surface.

  • Wipe down with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and oils.

4. Apply Protective Coating

  • Use a corrosion-inhibiting primer or sealant on the cleaned aluminum surface.

  • Alternatively, apply a thin layer of anti-corrosion compound (e.g., Duralac, Tef-Gel) where the fastener will contact the aluminum.

5. Isolate the Metals

  • Install nylon or plastic washers under the stainless bolts to prevent direct metal-to-metal contact.

  • If possible, use non-conductive sleeves for the bolt shank.

6. Reinstall Fasteners

  • Refit the stainless bolts, applying a small amount of anti-corrosion paste to the threads and contact points.

  • Tighten to the correct torque to avoid over-stressing the aluminum (do not over-tighten).

7. Ongoing Maintenance

  • Inspect the area periodically, especially after exposure to moisture or road salt.

  • Reapply anti-corrosion compound if needed.
