Salmonella in calves

It is VERY IMPORTANT you consult your vet around suspected salmonella.

There could be government movement controls associated with it and it is important we get a definitive diagnosis.

There are various strains of Salmonella and it is important we identify which one we are dealing with for future prevention.

Calves pick it up from ingesting milk / colostrum from shedding cows, or contaminated by infected faeces. They spread it amongst themselves via faeces in feed or licking etc.

<p>Clinical signs: </p><ul><li><p>Depressed</p></li><li><p>Diarrhoea ( often with blood )</p></li><li><p>Dehydration</p></li><li><p>Fever ( &gt;39.5 ) This often happens at an early age ( 3 - 10 days ) </p></li><li><p>Pneumonia and coughing can be present ( SOMETIMES EXCLUSIVELY )</p></li><li><p> Sudden death is common.</p></li></ul><p></p>

You can culture the bacteria in the shit, saliva and nasal secretions. PM culture of intestines and lungs can be useful.

Treatment:

CONSULATE YOUR VET.

Electrolytes Pain relief like meloxicam. Antibiotic usually Trimethoprim sulphate in combination with Tetracyclines for 7 days.

Infected calves that recover will become chronic shedders of the bacteria in shit and milk and this will occur mainly in times of stress.
