Break fencing is using electric fences to cut up an area of feed. This could be a crop or a grass paddock.

This is to ensure cows receive enough feed every day. This makes cows happy and keeps them healthy😊

Fences are put up using reels and pig tail standards.

Once you know where the fence is to be put up drop the reel at one end of the fence. Hang it on the fence so you can see it.

Now go to the other end and walk directly towards the reel carrying the pig tails.

Count about every 20 steps and put a pig tail in the ground like this.

It must be in the ground perpendicular to the way you are walking so the wire will stay in it once attached.

Once you reach the reel put the spare pig tails in the ground on the farm side of the fence to where the cows will be.

This means they won’t go missing lying in the grass and the cows won’t knock them onto the wire causing a short.

Now hook the insulated hook on the reel wire onto the fence. The insulation stops electricity going down the wire while you put up the fence.

Now walk back across the paddock hooking the wire onto the pigtails like this.

Once back at the other end lock the locking mechanism in on the reel.

Now test if the wire will be tight when you pull it to where you’ll hook it onto the fence. Adjust if necessary by winding or loosening the reel.

Now hook the wire around the steel hook on the reel a couple of times.

Put the steel hook onto the electric fence like this. Don’t touch anything other than the plastic handle while you do this OR YOU’LL GET A SHOCK⚡️ CAREFUL AS YOUR FENCE IS NOW ELECTRIFIED⚡️

Test the power on the break fence beside the reel.

Now drive to the other end of the fence and test it beside the hook.

If there is power at the reel and not at the hook you have a problem. Check for a fault. If you can’t find one let your manager know as there will be a break in the reel wire.
