Set up bins for rubbish

2
Step 2 of 12

You need 4 people on the trailer for loading.

Front person to ensure cow 1 doesn't turn their head back towards you.

The second person needs to be the strongest available.

The third needs to be the team leader and needs to be the most experienced person on the trailer to "directs traffic"

The gate person (person 4)needs to help ensure animals come in in a steady fashion and mainly operates on the ramp until cow 4 and 5 come in. At this point their main job is to ensure heads go in the right direction ( especially cow 5 ).

3
Step 3 of 12

The gate isn't opened until all the animals are ready to enter the trailer and everyone on the trailer is ready. AND the exit gate is shut.

4
Step 4 of 12

You don't need a lot of yelling and noise. Be calm and for best results cows walk onto the trailer in a steady fashion with no gaps between them ( if gaps happen this is when we run into problems on the trailer with animals turning ).

5
Step 5 of 12

The first 2 enter the trailer and leader grabs both tails and passes them to the strongman at position two. We never pull tails at this point and just let them stand there waiting for cow 3 to enter ( if you do pull on them they tend to just spin around and face the wrong way ). If the tail of cow 1 is missed don't reach in ( DANGER ) as it generally comes into reach when cow 2 has it's tail grabbed and it naturally swings into place.

Extreme calm and quiet is best at this point allowing the animals to just stand and person 1 making sure cow 1's head is n't turning.

6
Step 6 of 12

When cow 3 enters the leader grabs the tail and in combination with person 2 we pull the tails to get the first 3 animals to bail up. Person 1 must make sure the head of cow 1 doesn't turn.

7
Step 7 of 12

Cow 4 should usually just fit right in behind cow 3 although sometimes you need to direct the head across.

Problems occur if their is a gap between this cow coming into the trailer.

This is a key role of the gate person and those in the race to ensure it doesn't happen.

Prodding the animal usually helps and as a last resort zapping. BUT ONLY AS A LAST RESORT.

8
Step 8 of 12

Prodders.

AS SAID THE ZAPPING ABILITY IS A LAST RESORT ACTION. Using them as a prodder without zapping is OK.

WHEN A ZAPPER IS USED SHOULD BE THE CALL OF THE LEADER ONLY.

During the whole process the leader may ask for any of the front three cows to be zapped to push them up and stop a gap for them to turn in.

This should be a rare even but necessay if it occurs.

9
Step 9 of 12

Cow 5 ( and sometimes there are 6 ....see next step ) has little room to enter the trailer and here the gate person must ensure the head goes across. If you fail it is generally easier to push the cow back into the ramp and start again instead of jamming her up in front of cow 4 as cow 4 will struggle to get her bum back around to face you.

Cow 5 is generally the only animal that needs zapped ( But this should only be used as a last resort as you can usually pull her in ) due to the lack of space.

10
Step 10 of 12

5 or 6 animals?

It is essential for safety that the animals are tight and snug in the trailer. If they aren't they can move too much and the risk of someone getting kicked is increased AND the risk of them turning is increased.

Setting the number is trial and error for the first few loads.

If they are loose bring the breast rail as far out towards you as you can ( you can put the pins in the holes in front of the holder if necessary ).

If they are still too loose put the breast rail in as far as you can to create even more room in there and try 6 animals.

11
Step 11 of 12

Here's the whole process from start to finish.

12
Step 12 of 12

If you have more animals than techs have the fastest tech do 2 teats on one animal and then move to the spare one allowing the next finished to finish the other animal.
