Preparation

Ensure chocks are set and driver is clear of the truck. 

Use a mat if necessary, for protection while lying on the ground   

Make sure the ground underneath the jack is solid and won’t allow for any sinking or movement of the jack. If necessary, use solid blocks of wood to support the jack.

Positioning the Jack

Ensure the jack is on level, stable, ground and the jacking point on the commercial vehicle is suitable. (See following slides for suitable jacking positions) 

Look for a good jacking point where there is no chance of the truck slipping off the jack even if there was a small movement. Use axle stands if unsure.

Thrust Alignment Hanger

The thrust alignment hanger is one place that you can jack from. It is often the best place, as the axle is often too high off the ground to jack from.

Axle

The axle is another good place to jack from.

Front Axle Beam

The axle beam is a good place to jack under if you need to jack the front wheels.

It is always accessible and provides a flat solid surface.

You are also able to jack further under the truck where the axle beam is a bit lower (orange arrow) as that outer piece can sometimes be too high.

Letting Down the Jack

When letting down the jack, make sure you are in a position that is low enough so that you wont get crushed.

When ready, slowly release the valve to let the jack down.

Always keep the spanner on the valve until the jack has completely lowered. The reason for this is so that if something starts to go wrong you are able to stop it very quickly.
