Preparation
Ensure chocks are set and driver is clear of the truck.
Use a mat if necessary, for protection while lying on the ground.
Make sure the ground underneath the jack is solid and won’t allow for any sinking or movement of the jack. If necessary, use solid blocks of wood to support the jack.
Lock the truck out. See
Positioning the Jack
Ensure the jack is on level, stable, ground and the jacking point on the trailer is suitable. (See following slides for suitable jacking positions)
Axle
The axle on a commercial trailer is a good place to jack as it provides a sturdy jack point.
Please note that the only time that you might use one jack as shown in the photo is when the tub is completely empty or its a light trailer, and you need to jack up both wheels on the one axle.
If not, one or two jacks should be used at either end (orange arrows).
Airbag Suspension Arm
The airbag suspension arm is another place that you can jack from as it provides a nice flat and solid surface.
Please note that this is only suitable if it is a light trailer or if the tub is empty on dump trailers.
Letting Down the Jack
When letting down the jack, make sure you are in a position that is low enough so that you wont get crushed.
When ready, slowly release the valve to let the jack down.
Always keep the spanner on the valve until the jack has completely lowered. this is so that if something starts to go wrong you are able to stop it very quickly.
