General Approach
Inspect: Go to active work zones, look for hazards and things out of place.
Confirm: Always confirm the safety status of equipment and practices.
Verify: Always check service tags/dates are visible.
Capture: Take photos during the inspection to verify checks.
Action: If you identify a hazard or something not in place, raise an action in the inspection record.
NOTE: Immediately report any critical hazards to your manager.
Plant and Equipment (P&E) Safety
Guarding: Check moving parts, pinch points, and other hazards of machinery are adequately guarded.
Condition: Inspect condition (e.g., pumps, ladders, powered hand tools). Look for signs of wear, damage, or malfunction.
Isolation: Verify isolation points and procedures are clearly displayed.
Emergency Stops: Confirm buttons are easily identifiable and accessible.
PPE: Ensure PPE for operating particular P&E is sign-posted and worn.
Vehicle Pre-Starts: Check pre-start checks for mobile plant are recorded.
If applicable, Welding Equipment: Check condition and verify flashback arrestors inspected every 12 months.
Lifting Equipment Integrity
Condition: Inspect lifting equipment (slings, chains, hoists) are free from any visible damage, wear, or defects (e.g., corrosion, cracks, distorted links).
Certification: Verify periodic inspection has been completed by qualified third party (check tagged).
Storage & SWL: Check stored properly and Safe Working Load (SWL) limits are clearly displayed on equipment.
Electrical Safety
Inspection: Visually check equipment and leads for damage (cuts, fraying, exposed wires, damaged plugs, signs of overheating).
Test & Tag: Confirm electrical equipment is tested and tagged (date has not passed).
Socket Outlets: Ensure adequate outlets available, no overloaded power boards or adapters.
Leads: Verify electrical leads are kept clear of hazards (water, sharp edges, doorways, etc) and stored properly when not in use.
Reporting: Check damaged/faulty electrical equipment has been removed from service, tagged and reported.
Traffic Management
Segregation: Check controls to keep pedestrians and moving vehicles, forklifts, tractors, EWP apart are in place (e.g., physical barriers, exclusion zones, marked walkways).
Routes & Maintenance: Verify roads maintained and drivers follow site rules/speed limits.
Signage: Check signage for speed limits, warnings of mobile plant, and pedestrian crossings displayed.
PPE: Confirm high-visibility clothing used where required.
Seatbelts: Check seatbelts used in vehicles and mobile plant.
Raising Corrective Actions
If you identify a hazard or something not in place, raise an action. Be specific, designate a responsible person and date for completion. Where possible, consult with the assignee to agree the action, or talk to your manager.
