How to Trim Your Mustache By The Art of Manliness and Knowby

A few simple steps to how you can keep your beard looking less Ned Flanders and more Tom Selleck.

Step 1 of 6

Here are the tools you'll need for a mustache trim:

a fine-tooth mustache comb
a pair of small scissors designed for trimming mustaches.

You can also use a pair of electric clippers, but Ron Swanson would disapprove.

Step 2 of 6

First, comb your dry mustache with a fine-tooth mustache comb. If you comb it when your mustache is wet, your hair can appear longer, leading you to cut off too much.

Step 3 of 6

Using mustache scissors or electric trimmer, trim first for shape, cutting along the bottom of your mustache and then the outer edges. Work from the middle towards one side, then to the other side, and back to the middle. Look straight ahead and maintain a neutral face to get a smooth, even line.

Step 4 of 6

Now, trim for length. Comb through your mustache and cut hair on the outside of comb to desired length. Trim conservatively at first. If using electric trimmer, move from longer to shorter guides. You can always trim more off, but you can't add it back after you've clipped it.

Step 5 of 6

Comb through your mustache one last time and clip any hairs you may have missed. Looking good.
