Crypto is caused by a protozoan parasite NOT a bacteria or a virus. They shed oocysts in the calf faeces.
It is a zoonosis and will cause human infections .....HYGIENE is critical.
Crypto causes diarrhoea early in calves. They are lethargic and have poor appetite. It occurs from 1-4 weeks of age most commonly.

Diagnose with Rainbow 6 Scour Test Kit

Fecal shedding of oocysts can result in rapid spreading via the environment ( think feed, bedding, water ) or being transferred via people.
Oocysts are resistant to most disinfectants. Once in a shed it is hard to remove. Frosts help. Ammonia chloride and hydrogen peroxide can work.
Death is uncommon unless complicated by other diseases or adverse factors ( chilling ).
Diarrhoea is often milder than eg rota virus and persists for several days despite treatment. It generally occurs slightly later than virus or e coli diarrhoea.

Feces are yellow or pale, watery and contain mucus. You see marked weight loss and emaciation. Dehydration, weakness and collapse are less common than in other forms of calf scours.
Use the above signs alongside lab detection of oocysts to diagnose.

Treat symptoms via electrolytes but remember no more than 36 hours off milk even though the diarrhoea will last longer than this.

Halocur is used to prevent and treat crypto. It reduces oocyst shedding. MEAT WH 28 days.
PREVENT Start treatment at 24 - 48 hours of age. 35 - 45 kg calf 8 ml orally 45 - 60 kg calf 12 ml orally.
Treat daily for 7 days.
TREAT Start treatment within 24 hours of diarrhoea. Same dose rates and treatment length as for prevention.
