The aim is to get milk back to normal ( including an acceptable SCC ). AND kill the bacteria.

Milk may return to looking normal but bacteria may still be present.

It is best to do cultures to identify which bacteria are most prevalent on your farm and target antibiotics to these.

Mild and medium cases require intra mammaries ( or targeted intra musculars like mamyzin ). Often if it is only one quarter use an intra mammary. If two or more quarters are involved use a targeted intra muscle antibiotic.

ALWAYS wipe the teat clean before inserting a tube. Cure rates are significantly better if this is done.

Clean by dragging clean wipe across the teat like this. Note you’re always using a new bit of the wipe.

Don’t scrub like this you just smear it and see how dirty the wipe is.

Now carefully insert the intra mammary tube tip and empty the drug contents. While the tip is still in the teat squeeze your finger and thumb to push the drug up into the udder.

They also need pain relief from NSAIDs like meloxicam. These have been proven to improve cure rates and impact reproductive performance in mastitis cows.

Make sure you paint the cow so her milk doesn’t end up in the vat. Record her number against your records.

More severe cases need intramuscular antibiotics as well as the whole body is involved. Fluid therapy and ketol should also be used.
