


Opal Group handles paper reels of various widths, diameters, and weights. For the purposes of this procedure, all paper sizes with diameters between 1100 mm and 1530 mm, widths up to 2800 mm, and weights up to 3.6 tonnes are classified as 'Paper Reels."

Opal Group LUEZ - Loading, Unloading Exclusion Zone
Truck and Trailer area MUST be a total pedestrian exclusion zone while Forklift is in operation.

All Loads MUST Meet The Australian & New Zealand Loading Performance Standards.
Opal Group has developed an engineered load restraint system for securing paper reels.
- All transport carriers and truck drivers transporting paper reels MUST be trained in the system and carry a copy of document E01467 LRC & LRG.
Ratchet
Paper reel restraint MUST utilise high pre-tension ratchets only: this provides a pre-tension force of 600kg/f. The high pre-tension ratchet can be identified by:
- A pull-down mechanism
- Many smaller cog teeth
- A long handle
A standard ratchet and drum winch are NOT permitted for paper reel loading.
Edge Protection
Curved & knuckle edge protection ONLY
Square Edge Protection is NOT Permitted For Paper Reel Loading
Friction Mats
- All paper reels MUST be loaded on rated Rubber Friction Mats to support reel from trailer deck.
- Friction mats MUST have a minimum coefficient of friction rating of 0.6
What's NOT Acceptable Dunnage: (Anything Else)
- Hard rubber / conveyor belt
- Paper or cardboard
- Plywood
- Corflute
Lash Webbing
- Restraint lash webbing 2500kg x 50mm ONLY permitted.
- Lash webbing MUST be free of any damage.
Opal Group Paper Reel Pullback Strap - (refer to SOP - Application of Pullback Strap)
- The pullback strap MUST be used for any paper reel loading that requires a gap in the load.
What is a Gap in Load?
- A gap in load changes the load from a "blocked" to an "unblocked" configuration, which alters the required restraint methods.
A gap is defined as:
- Any gap more than 50mm between the first reel and the front headboard.
- A cumulative gap of more than 200mm between the trailer headboard, rear wall, and the paper reels.
- The pullback strap is designed to secure an unblocked group of reels with a total weight of up to 14.4 tonnes.
Number of Restraints Required to Meet Load Certification
One (1) Lash Webbing:
- All paper reels or multiple reels above 2699mm.
- All paper reels or mutiple reels less than 2500kg.
Two (2) Lash Webbing:
- All paper reels or multiple reels under 2700mm and above 2500kg.
NOTE -
- Two (2) lash webbings are required for the first two (2) reels in a gap in load block regardless of height and weight.
- Ensure the lash webbings are correctly centred at the top of the reel.
Stacked Paper Reels
- Paper reels MUST be blocked forward by the reel in front by at least half the height of the top reel.
- Place the paper reels with the smallest height at the bottom of the stack.
- Ensure tight stagger loading with no gaps
Best Practice - Loading
- Begin loading paper reels from the front headboard of the trailer and work towards the rear.
- Ensure that loaded reels are placed without gaps to create a stable block of freight.
- Use a pullback strap whenever a gap is needed to balance axle weight limits.
- Ensure each paper reel is secured using lash webbing(s) in compliance with the engineered load restraint system.
