Gather your supplies and place them on a clean work surface.

Collect the formula needed for tube feeding.

  • Store unopened formula at room temp in dry place
  • Shake well before opening
  • Clean top with damp cloth
  • Use immediately
  • Refrigerate opened box up to 24 hours

Syringe Preparation.

  • Clean syringes using warm soapy water and allow them to air-dry between uses.

Ensure you have a cup of lukewarm tap water.

If gravity feeding is indicated, gather and set up the gravity feeding bags. Ensure they are clean and ready for use.

Prepare the feeding pump if indicated.

Prepare IV Pole/Backpack if indicated.

Hand Hygiene. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.

Sit or stand in an upright position or elevate the head of your bed at least 30 to 45 degrees during and after feeding.

Place a towel in your lap to catch spills during the tube feeding process.

If your feeding tube has a clamp, ensure it is in the closed position before opening the end of the feeding tube.

If there is no clamp present, pinch the tube with your fingers to prevent leakage when opening.

Begin by hanging the feeding bag set on an IV pole or alternate hook.

Open the lid and fill the feeding bag set with the desired amount prior to setting up the pump.

Load the feeding set into your pump. You may use the same bag for 24 hours, then discard.

Turn the pump on.

  • If the desired rate was previously set, select "keep settings." If not, clear settings and set the rate.
  • Select "adjust feed," then "feed rate."
  • Use the buttons on the left to program the pump in millimeters per hour.

Select "enter" when the desired rate is set.

  • Press "Prime pump."
  • Press "Auto Prime" to automatically prime the pump, or press "Hold to Prime" if topping off the line. * Press "Done" if instructed by your treatment team.

Flush your tube with water as directed.

Connect the feeding set to your feeding tube and press "Run".

Once feeding is complete, press the power button to turn the pump off.
