Clostridial death in young calves
1
Step 1 of 5This bacteria is a normal inhabitant that becomes lethal in the right conditions.
2
Step 2 of 5Signs of abdominal pain, bloody scours, bloat, and sudden death within hours. They are often just found dead with no sign of scour.
Calves are under 2 weeks of age usually.
3
Step 3 of 5Causes of clostridial disease:
Irregular feeding times
Irregular feeding volumes
Sudden diet change
Unvaccinated dams
This allows milk to pool and ferment in the abomasum allowing the bacteria to proliferate and emit toxins.
4
Step 4 of 5There is little point in treatment.
Talk to your vet around potentially vaccinating calves for short term protection. But often fixing the cause will achieve a quicker result.
5
Step 5 of 5Management changes:
Fix feeding irregularities!
