The first step is to begin with hollow core aeration. This is to alleviate issues related to compaction, a common problem for homeowners due to general use of the lawn.
The aeration extracts plugs from the ground. Examining a plug reveals three layers: a tuft of grass at the top, a spongy "thatch layer" just below, and soil at the bottom. Healthy lawns show roots reaching the core's bottom.
Compacted soil prevents deep root penetration, resulting in unhealthy soil, as observed in this lawn.
The next step is scarification. This one easily eliminates excess thatch.
Thatch constitutes a natural layer of organic matter, consisting of entangled dead leaves and debris.
An optimal thin layer is beneficial, but when it becomes too thick, it hinders the absorption of water, air, and nutrients by the soil, leading to starvation and suffocation of the grass.
Use the scarifier tool to easily remove thatch from the lawn, enhancing breathability and overall health. After a double pass, let the extracted debris dry for easier cleanup later.
We must clear all debris from the lawn.
Scarification serves another purpose—it creates soil lines for seeding, which is the subsequent step.
The next step is overseeding. This thickens the lawn by adding fresh grass seed into the scarification-created lines, promoting even colour, enhanced disease resistance, improved weed resistance, and greater drought tolerance.
In the overseeding process, the crucial next step is to achieve optimal seed-to-soil contact for successful germination. To accomplish this, we use a tool known as a "drag mat," specifically designed to pull the seed into the ground.
After renovating, feed for recovery. Avoid "weed and feed" for seed protection. Keep newly seeded lawns consistently moist—light waterings twice daily for the first two weeks, then heavier every other day for the next week. Adjust to prevent wilting.
Proper watering post-seeding promotes strong, deep roots in your lawn. We're currently applying a product called "seaweed" to enhance seed germination.
Maintain your lawn with regular mowing and watering. Enjoy!
