A 3D step shows an interactive 3D model instead of a photo or video. Anyone viewing the knowby can rotate it with a mouse or finger — like holding the real part in their hands.
Supported formats: GLB and glTF.
To add one, go to the Create/Edit screen, switch to the Steps tab.
Drag your GLB file into the upload area, or click Browse and pick it.
The step becomes a 3D step automatically — Knowby recognises the file type for you.
Check the model:
Drag to rotate — click and drag to spin it.
Click Expand to view it bigger.
Wrong file? Click Replace and pick again.
Write your step text under the model, same as any other step. The model shows what the part looks like. Your text explains what to do with it.
How your team sees it:
On a computer: the model sits right in the step — rotate in place, or expand to full screen.
On a phone or tablet: the step shows an Open document button. Tapping it opens the model full screen, where it rotates the same way.
Good to know:
Need a GLB? Most 3D tools export to it (in Blender: File → Export → glTF 2.0). Got an OBJ, STL, or FBX instead? A free online converter turns it into GLB in a minute.
3D steps need an internet connection — they aren't available offline, unlike photos and videos.
In a PDF export or print-out, the step shows a link to view the model online instead.
Smaller files load faster for people in the field.
